February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, as declared by the United Nations. This date is an occasion to reflect on important questions. At Técnico, areas as Informatics/Computer Science and Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, are examples of the ones that least attract female students. How to expand female participation in science and technology? How to reaffirm the critical role of women in these areas for technological and social development? In the past and at present, in Portugal and abroad, how do women influence and perceive Science?
On February 14th, the 7th edition of Contigo+ is dedicated to these problems. It will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM in meeting room 4.4.1 of the Civil Engineering Pavilion (2nd floor).
The program includes two reputed keynote speakers, Professors Petra Rudolf* and Anália Torres**, who are well recognized internationally.

*Petra Rudolf was born in Munich, Germany. She studied Physics at the La Sapienza University of Rome, where she specialized in Solid State Physics. She worked at the National Surface Science laboratory TASC INFM in Trieste, at Bell Labs in the USA, and at the University of Namur, before taking up the Chair in Experimental Solid State Physics at the University in Groningen in 2003. Her principal research interests lie in the areas of condensed matter physics and surface science. Prof. Rudolf has guided 34 MSc and 33 PhD students to the successful defence of their theses and supervised 24 postdoctoral research fellows. Professor Rudolf served as the President of the European Physical Society in 2019/21 and of the Belgian Physical Society in 2000/01. She was elected member of the Academia Europaea, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, and foreign corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna; she was also elected honorary member of the Italian Physical Society, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Lid van verdienste of the Dutch Physical Society and Fellow of the American Physical Society. For her work on molecular motors she received the 2007 Descartes Prize of the European Commission. In 2013 she was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau by H.M. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
**Anália Torres holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is a full professor of Sociology at ISCSP, the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She is the founder and coordinator of CIEG, the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies at ISCSP, recognized as a center of excellence by FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology). She served as the President of the European Sociological Association (ESA) and was a member of the evaluation panel for “Institutions, Values, Beliefs, and Behaviour” at the European Research Council. Currently, she leads the CIEG team in the Ge-HEI project – Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions. Anália Torres has coordinated several research teams nationally and internationally, focusing on themes such as family, gender, marriage, divorce, work and family, poverty, substance abuse, youth, and the protection of children and young people. Her work on marriage and divorce contributed to the amendment of divorce laws, adapting them to the Portuguese reality. Professor Anália Torres was honored with the Scientific Merit Medal in 2023. The Scientific Merit Medals, awarded by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education (MCTES), aim to “acknowledge national or foreign individuals who, due to their high professional qualities and fulfillment of duty, have distinguished themselves through valuable and exceptional contributions to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal.”
